The seemingly ‘strange’ prayers of the Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries hit the Christian world like a thunderbolt back in the years when the Ministry debuted and while some Christians appreciated and keyed into the prayer style immediately, many others condemned it, even some church leaders did not understand it and spoke openly against it, in vehement condemnation during their sermons. Contrary to the regular, straitjacket prayer styles that was the norm amongst places of worship across the country, the Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries, a Pentecostal denomination, which hit the Nigerian landscape in July 1989, turned the country’s prayer styles around, with the fire, style, vigour and vehemence the members of the Ministry put into their prayers, which was strange then.

Interestingly today, all Christian denominations have keyed into the MFM fire prayer style, as even some churches pray the MFM prayers in totality, without taking out or adding anything to it. The churches have since caught the bug of the MFM fire prayer style, ostensibly because they see it working for the members of MFM. The secret behind the fire prayers, was never known by either the MFM members or even other Christian non-members, who have since adopted the prayer styles.

Unraveling the secret behind the evolution of the hot prayer style of MFM members recently, the founder and General Overseer of MFM worldwide, Dr. Daniel Kolawole Olukoya, during the weekly midweek evening service, Manna Water Service of 6th August 2025, with the topic ‘When You Do Not Know Yourself (Part 2)’ at the MFM International Headquarters, said that he was going to tell members the secret behind the MFM hot prayers.

According to him, “I was in the secondary school, preparing for the final exam. That evening, I was walking past and somebody called me, Brother Daniel, come and help us; we were trying to fry something, the frying pan had caught fire.’ So, I ran there, to want to help. I didn’t know that I went to look for trouble. I got to the door mouth of the kitchen; I was not sleeping; my eyes were fully wide awake. Before my very eyes, the fire burning inside the frying pan became a ball of fire, rose up and it changed direction in right angle and was coming towards me. You would say, ‘Why didn’t you run?’ I couldn’t; I was stuck to that spot. Suddenly, that ball of fire landed on my leg and my right leg began to burn and I started shouting, ‘My leg! My leg!’ Three adults came there and one said, ‘Ha, let us put iced water.’ The second person said, ‘No, let us put pap,’ and the third one said, ‘No, let us crush eggs and put it there.’

“So, they were arguing, eggs, water, pap, eggs, water pap. They didn’t know what to do. I now started begging them, ‘Please, stop arguing. Take a decision.’ Eventually, they settled for iced water, which they brought, and they poured it on the leg but by that time, the leg had ballooned, and it was painful. That made me sit at home for weeks. I could not go to school; my right foot could not fit into any shoe. Even if it did, I cannot walk with it. They were treating if for several weeks and it was improving but when it became less swollen, I decided to go to school. So, I wore shoe on one leg and the other leg, bandaged.

“On my first day at school, the results of those who took exams were released and all of us went to look at the results. In our school in those days, we were ruled by the bell. Once the bell rings for you to go into your classroom, everybody runs into their classroom. If you don’t run, we have a cane master, who will whip you into your classroom. So, we were looking at the results; suddenly, the bell rang, and all the boys ran into their classes but me, with one and half legs, I was just going slowly. The cane master came, and he thought I was just walking with style and he ran behind me with the cane. I tried to run but my legs could not run; I summersaulted and broke my left arm.

“Here is Brother Daniel: right leg is roasted, left arm is broken and he wants to go for exam. My mates said, ‘Let us take you to your parents, so they will take care of you,’ I said, ‘No, don’t take me to my parents. If they see these, they will faint. My parents were shocked when they saw that the boy, who left home in the morning with bandage on one leg had come back in the evening with PoP (Plaster of Paris) on one arm in the evening. I ended up staying at home and examination was coming. It was on that bed that the angel of the Lord came up to me and he said, ‘Son, what happened to your leg?’ and I said, ‘It was roasted, and it is paining me.’ He asked, ‘What happened to your arm?’ I said it was broken. He said, ‘And you cannot see that this is an agenda of the enemy, so that you don’t take the exam.’ I said, ‘I see’, and he said that, ‘If you see, start praying like this’ and that was how the prayers started. One of the prayers I prayed on that bed is one of our most popular prayer points now, Owners of evil loads, what are you waiting for? Carry your loads, in the name of Jesus.’

“It was on that bed that I discovered who I was. I prayed those prayers; I was able to take my exam, and I came out with the best result in that school for that year. We pray in our church, but I never knew that one could pray like that and get results,” Olukoya declared.
